Mrs. Darlene began training in taekwondo in 1990 at the Haines City Taekwondo School under Master Rick and Master Keva Harris, who train directly under the Legendary Kwan Jang of the United States Chung Do Kwan Association, Grandmaster Edward Sell and Grandmaster Brenda Sell.
After graduating high school, beginning a career, and starting her family, she returned to training in 2010 with the Davenport Christian Taekwondo University under Master Randolph Thompson, who also studied under the Master's Harris and Grandmaster’s Sell.
Mrs. Darlene successfully completed the official Nationally Certified Instructors Training Course in January 2012 and then joined Master Juan Bristol at Self Defense & Weapons Tactics in July 2013 as an Associate Instructor.
In addition to teaching taekwondo, she has been a Flogging Clogging Council Certified Clogging Instructor since 1996. She has competed in many tournaments and competitions in Florida and North Carolina, holding National titles in taekwondo for sparring and forms as well as in clogging for hoedowns, traditional lines, exhibition, and duo/duets.
She also enjoys zumba, line dancing, weight training, jogging, kayaking, tubing, snow sledding, hiking, and the Beachbody programs Cize, Hip Hop Abs, Focus T25, Insanity, Country Heat, Core de Force, and Body Beast.
Mrs. Darlene lived in Central Florida before moving to North Carolina in March 2012. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration: Supervision and Management from Polk State College in Winter Haven, Florida, graduating first in her class with Summa Cum Laude Honors. She is pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Business Administration from Appalachian State University. She currently works at the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center in Morganton as an Office Administrator in the Professional Services Department.
Mrs. Darlene met her husband, Sam, in high school in 1992 and they married in 1994. They have two children, Julia and Daniel, born in 1996 and 2004, respectively. Julia married Daniel Chester in June 2015 and are expecting their first son, Michael, in May 2017.
